Clinic for Endocrine Surgery

We are a clinic focused on the treatment of thyroid and parathyroid diseases. Approximately 3,000 patients entrust themselves to us annually. Roughly half of them are treated surgically by my team and me. Throughout the entire surgical treatment we attach great importance to techniques which considerately take care of both tissue and structure. Apart from the benign struma, our medical treatment also specialises on Morbus Basedow, the parathyroid glands and thyroid tumours.

Since 2012 we have been among the 10 reference centres listed as relevant for thyroid and parathyroid surgery by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Allgemein- und Viszeral Chirurgie (German Society for General and Visceral Surgery). We examine our patients with the most up-to-date methods, e.g. ultrasound elastography, a careful proceeding to assess both benign and malignant thyroid nodules.

Our commitment aims at doing everything necessary for a complete and quick recovery of our patients.

Diagnostics and therapy

Our medical services particularly comprise the diagnostic and therapy of ...

  • benign and malignant diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands such as tumours or Morbus Basedow,
  • neuro-endocrine tumours of the pancreas and intestine,
  • suprarenal gland diseases.

We particularly focus on parathyroid surgery.

In order to provide the best possible care for our patients, we work in close cooperation with other endocrinologists, internists, nephrologists and nuclear medicine specialists.

The optimal treatment of malignant diseases of the thyroid is an outstanding concern of ours. Therefore ...

  • we offer specific follow-up care based on a referral from an endocrinologist;
  • we keep our own register showing extent and progress of patients suffering from thyroid carcinoma. Thus we can continuously improve the treatment of thyroid diseases. So far the data of 3,000 patients made anonymous have been integrated into this analysis;
  • our study nurse looks after those of our patients participating in the analysis. She is the link between the patient and the treating and researching physicians. In addition, she maintains the study register.

Reference centre for thyroid and parathyroid surgery

In 2012, our clinic was certified as a reference centre for thyroid and parathyroid surgery by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Allgemein- und Viszeral Chirurgie (German Society for General and Visceral Surgery). In 2018, we have been re-certified as a reference centre. Therefore, we continue to be one of currently 10 reference centres throughout Germany and the only one in Hesse.

In order to be certified as a reference centre, we had to comply with certain requirements, concerning the technical know-how of our physicians and nursing staff, the frequency and procedure of the surgery a well as the equipment of the clinic. The treatments and their results require constant analytic and scientific assessment. The reference centre is furthermore characterised by an extremely low number of complications. At the Bürgerhospital Frankfurt, this is significantly lower than half of the required value.

The certificate is valid for three years. However, compliance with these standards is checked by DGAV on an annual basis.

Thermo ablation section

Thyroid nodules occur quite frequently in an iodine deficient area such as Germany. In most cases these are benign nodules which, however, may cause a sensation of unpleasant pressure in the throat, hoarseness or the urge to clear one’s throat. Some also lead to an overactive thyroid. If the nodules have to be removed, the treatment usually involves surgery or radio-iodine by which the nodules’ tissue will be dissolved.

In the meantime, however, proceedings have been developed in which the tissue of benign thyroid nodules is specifically heated to a certain degree to make it dissolve. These thermo ablation procedures take care of the patients, lack side effects and can be applied without extended stays in a hospital.

In our thermo ablation section, we are capable of treating certain thyroid nodules with radio frequencies, microwaves, ultrasound or laser; often entirely without a single cut of the skin. For this purpose, the nodule has to be benign and at a sufficient distance from the vocal cord’s nerve.

Together with the patient, our physicians discuss whether the treatment of a thyroid nodule can or must be carried out by thermo ablation or surgically.
